In a major accident on Saturday, a container truck lost control near the entrance of a tunnel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, leading to a pile-up involving nearly 18 to 20 vehicles. The incident occurred near Shree Datta Snacks, located after the Lonavala-Khandala Ghat stretch.
According to media report, the container truck, allegedly speeding, suffered brake failure and rammed into a vehicle near the food mall. This triggered a chain-reaction crash, severely damaging multiple vehicles—three of which were completely crushed. Shocking visuals from the scene have since gone viral on social media.
At least 16 people were reported injured in the accident, with several sustaining serious injuries. Emergency teams and police rushed to the site to rescue victims and clear the debris.
The accident caused a massive traffic jam on one of India’s busiest expressways, with vehicles stranded in a 5-kilometer-long queue. Authorities had to divert traffic to alternative routes to manage the congestion.
Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage while recording statements from witnesses to determine the exact sequence of events.
