The government is set to introduce a state-run, app-based transport service that will offer auto-rickshaw, taxi, and bike rides. The key goals of the initiative are to address ongoing issues with existing cab services and to generate employment opportunities for Marathi youth.
Currently under development, the app will be officially launched after receiving approval from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. A high-level meeting is scheduled for August 5 at Mantralaya to finalise the app’s framework. Suggested names for the service include Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri, and Maha-Go.
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik’s Statement
Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik said, “The initiative will empower lakhs of youth across Maharashtra and provide a strong alternative to the monopoly of private aggregator companies.”
He said that to further aid the unemployed Marathi youth, Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank has pledged to offer vehicle loans at a concessional 10% interest rate. Additionally, 11% interest subsidy will be offered through institutions like the Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, Vimukta Jati Corporation, and OBC Corporation, effectively making the loan interest-free.
Sarnaik informed that the app’s operational framework is in its final stage and is being drafted in line with the Centre’s aggregator guidelines. He added that the app is being developed in collaboration with the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology, along with consultations from private technology firms.
Minister Slams Private Cabs for Exploiting Passengers and Drivers
The minister strongly criticised private cab services for taking advantage of both passengers and drivers, highlighting the need for a fairer alternative. He said the upcoming government-run app would ensure equal benefits for both sides.
Sources revealed that the new app-based service will also tackle issues like drivers refusing short-distance rides, a common complaint in Mumbai. The initiative aims to provide relief from problems such as overcharging and surge pricing.
