The Maharashtra Election Commission is expected to apply for an extension of the period for conducting local body elections. The Supreme Court in May this year had directed the Election Commission to complete the elections within four months.
State Election Commission Chief Dinesh Waghmare said that extension of the period is being sought to complete the preparations for the polls. Waghamre reviewed the preparations in Marathwada and stated that the procedure for marking the wards and group formation is in progress. The reservations will also be decided based on the census of 2011. Waghmare also reviewed the preparations relating to the facilities of polling centres, polling booths, control units, ballot units, human resources, etc. Divisional Commissioner Jitendra Papalkar, Municipal Commissioner G Shrikant, District Collectors Dilip Swami, Dr Shrikrishna Panchal, and other officers from the division were present.
Finalising the voters’ list is the major task. The division of voters as per the wards must be carried out carefully. Security of the EVM, updating the EC website, App providing information to the voters etc, is in progress, and may require more time.
