The deadline for installing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on old vehicles is set to expire on August 15, 2025. Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar has clarified that, as of now, no decision has been taken to extend the deadline, raising the possibility of action against vehicles not fitted with HSRP after this date. However, those who have made bookings before the deadline may be granted some relief.
Since 2019, the Maharashtra government has made HSRP mandatory for all vehicles. The process of HSRP implementation has been actively carried out across Nagpur region. According to official records, the Nagpur City RTO (MH31) has registered ?9.59 crore in HSRP fees, the Nagpur Rural RTO (MH40) has collected ?9.30 crore, and the East Nagpur Sub-RTO (MH49) has recorded ?1.45 crore. In total, out of 22.43 lakh registered vehicles, around 4 lakh vehicles have been fitted with HSRPs.
A statewide meeting of regional transport officers is scheduled for August 11 and 12, to be chaired by the Transport Commissioner. During this meeting, the matter of extending the HSRP deadline may be discussed. However, in a statement to Lokmat, Commissioner Bhimanwar made it clear that no formal decision regarding the extension has been taken as of now.
As per current estimates, around 18 lakh vehicles are still operating without HSRP in Nagpur region. Similar trends are being observed in other parts of the state. Although online appointment systems have been introduced to ease the booking process, the backlog is such that even if a vehicle owner books today, it is unlikely that the plate will be delivered within the next 7 days.
Vehicle owners are advised to book their HSRP before the August 15 deadline to avoid penalties. While some relaxation may be given for those with booking receipts, action against non-compliant vehicles seems imminent.
