Maharashtra’s Minister for Cultural Affairs Ashish Shelar has announced that the state government has successfully taken possession of the historic sword of Raghuji Bhosale, founder of Nagpur’s Bhosale dynasty and an important commander in the Maratha army during the reign of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. The acquisition follows the government’s victory in an international auction earlier this year.
Calling it “a moment of great joy,” Shelar said, “The sword is now in our possession! On behalf of the Government of Maharashtra, we have taken possession of this historic treasure in London. We will soon bring it to Maharashtra and make it available for the people to see”.
The Minister explained that the process of acquiring the sword—from winning the bid in the auction to physically taking charge of it—was completed with careful coordination between the Maharashtra government and Indian authorities in the UK.
Shelar expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his guidance in the process, the officers of the Indian High Commission in London for their assistance, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and the officials of the state’s Cultural Affairs Department for their dedicated efforts.
The historic sword, once belonging to Raghuji Bhosale, is considered a significant relic of Maratha history and will soon be brought to Maharashtra, where arrangements will be made for the public to view it.
