Even as the BJP and its allies hold power in the state, and in CM Devendra Fadnavis’s own Nagpur, the party’s own youth wing has flagged illegal sale of gutkha, tobacco, cigarettes and other intoxicants around schools and colleges.
The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha’s Student Wing submitted a memorandum to the Additional Commissioner of Police (North Nagpur Division), demanding immediate action against illegal paan stalls and shops selling such items near educational institutions.The wing alleged that such sales are rampant within 100-200 metres of several schools and colleges in North Nagpur, pushing students toward addiction and harming their health, education and future. Under Section 6(b) of the COTPA Act, 2003, sale of tobacco products within 100 metres of educational institutions is prohibited — a rule the memorandum says is being openly flouted.
The memorandum, submitted under the guidance of BJYM Nagpur city president Sachin Karare, in the presence of metropolitan general secretary Ritesh Pandey and led by student wing city coordinator Shantanu Zade, demanded a special survey of all school and college areas in North Nagpur, immediate removal of illegal stalls, strict legal action against violators, and regular special drives against such illegal trade going forward. It also called for urgent administrative steps to safeguard students’ health, safety and an addiction-free future.
Also present were co-coordinators Ashu Gumgaonkar and Prayag Pandey, along with Yash Gaur, Aryan Takbhaware, Arnavdeep Singh Mair, Hargul Singh Ghotra, Harshesh Gaur, Anuj Samundre, and Rishabh Badode.
