India Post has announced that it will discontinue its historic and trusted Registered Post service from September 1, merging it with the Speed Post network to create a faster, more convenient, and unified postal system.
For decades, Registered Post has been a preferred option for sending important legal documents and government correspondence, as it ensured delivery only to the designated recipient. Speed Post, on the other hand, is known for its timely deliveries but traditionally allows items to be handed over to any household member.
Under the merger, Speed Post will now offer new “addressee-specific” and “address-specific” delivery options, bringing the security features of Registered Post to the faster service.
Affordable Rates to Continue
Current local Registered Post rate (up to 20g): ₹22
Speed Post local rate (up to 50g): ₹15
Nationwide “One India, One Rate” Speed Post tariff: ₹35 (excluding taxes)
The postal department stated that the decision was driven by the declining demand for Registered Post and the need to provide customers with a faster, reliable, and secure service. The Karnataka High Court has also recognized Speed Post as a valid alternative to Registered Post.
A New Era for Postal Services
While the discontinuation marks the end of an era for Registered Post, the upgraded Speed Post with enhanced security features promises to be a more efficient, safe, and cost-effective solution for customers across India.
