Nagpur’s waste offenders may soon face a financial shock, as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is considering doubling penalties for construction & demolition (C&D) waste and biomedical waste violations. The proposal, now with the municipal commissioner, could be cleared in the coming weeks.
Currently, small-scale home repair waste left beyond 48 hours attracts a ₹2,000 per day fine, while private builders pay ₹5,000–₹10,000 daily depending on quantity. Biomedical waste penalties range from ₹15,000 to ₹1 lakh. Under the new plan, these figures will be slashed from offenders’ pockets twice as hard — up to ₹20,000 per day for bulk C&D waste and ₹2 lakh for biomedical breaches.
The Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) says repeat offenders often treat existing fines as a routine cost. “Higher daily penalties will make them think twice,” an NMC official said.
Between January and June 2025, the NDS penalized 4,658 individuals and 232 builders, collecting ₹1.16 crore for C&D waste violations. Biomedical waste incidents — including syringes and soiled bandages dumped in open areas — were also recorded. General waste mismanagement drew fines of ₹25.43 lakh from 4,487 people, with Laxmi Nagar zone topping the list.
If cleared, the hike will be backed by daily enforcement and possible criminal action for repeat offenders, aiming to give Nagpur’s cleanliness drive a sharper edge ahead of the festive season.
