In a clear breach of traffic safety regulations, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Dr. Ashish Deshmukh has been fined ₹2,500 by the traffic police for riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet during the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ bike rally in Saoner.
The rally, held as part of Independence Day celebrations to promote the national flag campaign, saw hundreds of participants waving the Tricolour and riding in a convoy. Dr. Deshmukh was captured on video leading the rally on a red motorcycle, without the mandatory protective gear, while traffic police personnel were present along the route.
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, wearing a helmet is compulsory for all two-wheeler riders, including public representatives, and violations attract monetary penalties. The visuals of the MLA’s helmetless ride quickly went viral on social media, prompting widespread criticism about selective enforcement of laws and the example set by elected leaders.
Following public outcry, the traffic department issued a challan imposing a ₹2,500 fine for helmet violation and other traffic rule breaches. Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
