The Nagpur Rural Police have registered an FIR at Ramtek Police Station against Sanjay Kumar, psephologist and senior official at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), following his controversial social media post related to the Maharashtra assembly elections.
According to police officials, the FIR has been filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 175, 353(1)(b), 212, and 340(1)(2). These charges pertain to spreading false information, misleading the public, and violations connected to the election process.
The case was initiated after Kumar had posted data claiming a decline in voter turnout in certain constituencies compared to the previous elections. The post triggered sharp reactions from political circles, especially with allegations that it could influence the ongoing electoral narrative.
A day earlier, Sanjay Kumar had deleted the post and issued a public clarification, stating that he had misread the data and regretted the error. Despite the retraction, police said the remarks could not be ignored given their sensitive nature during elections, leading to the registration of the case.
Authorities confirmed that further investigation is underway, and Kumar may soon be called in for questioning.
