Nagpur: The city’s Traffic Department has constituted seven dedicated squads to curb the menace of private travel buses parking unlawfully on city roads. The enforcement drive began today (Wednesday) at 8 a.m. and will continue till 10 p.m., informed Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani.
As per the revised guidelines, private travel buses will not be permitted to pick up, drop, or halt passengers within the Inner Ring Road and its surrounding radius between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Operators will have to use their designated parking lots or approved points outside the Ring Road. Authorities say the measure is intended to ease the worsening congestion in Nagpur, a city with a population of nearly 30 lakh and over 25 lakh registered vehicles.
Frequent traffic snarls have been attributed to ongoing development work, narrow stretches, and large buses halting in busy areas, causing gridlocks as well as air and noise pollution. The special drive will remain in force till September 12, 2025, with police maintaining strict surveillance on bus operations. Illegal halts in “No Parking” zones outside the Ring Road have also been prohibited.
Bus operators have been instructed to inform passengers, update their websites, and finalize alternate boarding points within a week. Violators will face action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. DCP Matani urged private bus owners and drivers to extend cooperation to ensure smoother traffic movement and public convenience.
