On August 15, 2025, marking India’s Independence Day, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways launched the FASTag Annual Pass, a prepaid toll solution for private vehicle owners. For a one-time payment of Rs. 3,000, drivers can access National Highways and Expressways unlimitedly for one year or up to 200 toll crossings, whichever comes first. This system provides an alternative to paying tolls per trip.
The public response has been strong. Within 24 hours, over 1.4 lakh users signed up, and by the fourth day, subscriptions exceeded five lakh.
FASTag Annual Pass: Who Can Apply?
The pass is available for private, non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans that already have an active FASTag. It is non-transferable and can only be used on the registered vehicle. In point-based toll plazas, each one-way crossing counts as a trip and a return counts as two. In closed or ticketed systems, a full entry-to-exit journey counts as one trip.
FASTag Annual Pass: What It Doesn’t Cover
The pass is valid only on National Highways and Expressways managed by the Central Government, including toll plazas run by NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. It is not valid on state-managed highways or expressways, such as the Yamuna Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, and Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. Commercial vehicles, taxis, local tolls, and parking charges are also excluded and will continue to be charged through regular FASTag accounts.
FASTag Annual Pass: How to Activate
- Open the Rajmarg Yatra app or visit the official NHAI/MoRTH portal.
- Submit your Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) and FASTag ID to verify eligibility.
- Complete the Rs. 3,000 payment via UPI, net banking, or credit/debit card.
- Receive confirmation via SMS or in-app notification, usually within two hours.
- Once activated, two accounts will exist for the same FASTag—one for the annual pass and one for regular payments.
If your FASTag is registered only with a chassis number, update it with the vehicle registration number before applying. After expiry, the FASTag automatically reverts to regular mode. Renewal requires paying Rs. 3,000 again.
For frequent long-distance commuters, the FASTag Annual Pass can save thousands of rupees annually while improving efficiency and convenience on highways.
