Despite repeated warnings from the High Court over the growing problem of stray dogs in Nagpur, the issue has now surfaced inside one of the city’s most high-profile complexes — Ravi Bhavan, which houses ministerial bungalows.
The office of Minister of State for Finance Adv. Ashish Jaswal has raised concerns in a letter, demanding urgent steps to control the menace. However, despite multiple reminders from the Public Works Department (PWD), the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has not initiated any concrete action.
Ravi Bhavan is home to the official residences of the Assembly Speaker, Legislative Council Chairman, and several cabinet ministers, particularly during the winter session. Senior government officials also stay here while on duty, making it a high-security zone. Yet, large groups of stray dogs have been roaming freely within the premises, creating a serious inconvenience and security concern.
Nearby government residences, including Nag Bhavan, the Deputy Chief Minister’s residence Devgiri, and the Chief Minister’s Secretariat at Hyderabad House, are also facing the same issue. Records reveal that the PWD had written to the NMC on January 16, February 28, April 7, and June 24 this year, but no corrective measures were taken. Visitors and staff members at the complex continue to be harassed by stray dogs, highlighting the civic body’s inaction.
