In view of increasing incidents of stray dog attacks in Nagpur city, the Commissioner of Police has invoked Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code to control the situation and ensure public safety.
The order states that feeding stray dogs at public places, housing societies, footpaths, or near schools and hospitals without designated feeding zones is prohibited. Citizens have been directed to feed dogs only at specified spots identified by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in consultation with Animal Welfare Board guidelines.
Unauthorized relocation of stray dogs, provoking them, or creating nuisance in residential areas by feeding at random places has also been banned. Strict action will be taken against individuals or groups violating these directives.
The order further emphasizes cooperation between NMC, NGOs, and citizens for sterilization and vaccination drives to manage the stray dog population. Police have also appealed to residents not to spread misinformation or create unnecessary panic on social media.
This order came into force on June 24, 2024, and will remain applicable until further instructions.
