Nagpur City Police, after tightening their grip on criminal activities, have now turned their focus towards eliminating begging from the city’s streets. Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal has issued a notification prohibiting begging on public roads, which will remain in force from August 25 until midnight of October 23.
According to Dr. Singal, begging is a punishable offence under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and is also restricted under laws relating to public order. The order notes that groups of beggars have increasingly been seen at busy squares and junctions, often pressuring motorists and pedestrians to give money. Their presence, the notification adds, poses both a nuisance and a threat to public safety.
Police personnel have been directed to take strict action against beggars occupying footpaths, traffic signals, and traffic islands, as their activities hinder smooth vehicular movement. While citizens frequently face harassment, many avoid filing complaints out of fear of retaliation. Terming begging a form of public nuisance, the city police have decided to adopt a zero-tolerance approach.
An extensive action plan has been prepared to clear city roads of beggars. Citizens with objections to the order may write to [email protected] or send written submissions to the Commissioner of Police, Police Bhavan, Civil Lines, Nagpur. Dr. Singal assured that genuine concerns raised by the public will be duly considered.
