Government contractors from across Maharashtra staged a massive “Bhik Mango Andolan” at Constitution Chowk in Nagpur on Tuesday, protesting against the state government over non-payment of dues. The protesters alleged that payments worth nearly ₹89,000 crore for works completed under departments such as Public Works, Rural Development and Jal Jeevan Mission remain pending for more than a year.
The Nagpur Contractors’ Association, led by President Subodh Sarode, said that despite repeated appeals and several delegations meeting the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers, only “empty assurances” were given. The agitation follows a spate of distress incidents, including the suicide of a contractor in Sangli and threats of self-harm by others across the state.
Contractors warned that if dues are not cleared immediately, ongoing and future development works in Maharashtra will come to a standstill, holding the government responsible for the crisis.
