Nagpur: In a bid to ensure safer and obstruction-free footpaths for pedestrians, the Traffic Branch of Nagpur Police Commissionerate has rolled out a special campaign titled ‘Footpath Freedom’.
Traffic officials pointed out that hawkers frequently occupy pavements in busy markets and crowded localities by putting up makeshift stalls. Customers visiting these vendors often park their vehicles close to or on the footpaths, leaving pedestrians with no option but to walk on the main roads. This, officials said, creates a risky situation and significantly increases the chances of accidents.
To tackle the issue, the traffic department, in coordination with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s encroachment removal wing, carried out a joint drive. Several unauthorized stalls and temporary structures were removed as part of the operation.
Authorities stressed that keeping pavements free for pedestrians remains a key priority and cautioned that strict action will continue against repeat offenders. The initiative, they said, is expected to restore smooth pedestrian movement and reduce accident risks across the city.
