Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) has achieved another historic milestone, as the Guinness World Records has officially recognized the Kamptee Road Double Decker Viaduct as the longest metro double-decker viaduct in the world.
The certification ceremony was held today at Ramgiri, the official residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who graced the occasion as the chief guest. Mr. Swapnil Dangirikar from Guinness World Records presented the certificate to Maha Metro’s Managing Director, Mr. Shravan Hardikar, in the presence of the Chief Minister.
The Kamptee Road Double Decker Viaduct, with a total length of 5,626.44 meters, stands as the longest such structure in India. Built on single-column piers using advanced rib and spine technology, it represents a remarkable feat of modern engineering and architecture. The viaduct was inaugurated earlier by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on October 5, 2024.
Notably, Maha Metro had previously entered the Guinness World Records for its 3.14 km double-decker viaduct on Wardha Road, which includes the Ujjwal Nagar, Jayprakash Nagar, and Chhatrapati Square metro stations, with the certification awarded on December 6, 2022.
The Kamptee Road viaduct is designed as a four-tiered transport system, with the ground level carrying an existing highway, the first deck accommodating a national highway, and the second deck dedicated to the metro line. Along this stretch, five metro stations—Gaddi Godam, Kadbi Square, Indora Square, Nari Road, and Automotive Square—have been constructed. At Gaddi Godam, near the Gurudwara, engineers executed India’s first-ever 1,650-ton capacity launch in an urban setting, a technically complex and challenging task. The construction required a 24-hour block from Indian Railways to manage heavy road and rail traffic simultaneously, further highlighting the scale of the achievement.
This engineering marvel has brought immense relief to citizens traveling along Kamptee Road by reducing traffic congestion, saving time and fuel, and offering direct connectivity. By adopting innovative design and construction methods, Maha Metro was able to avoid additional land acquisition and rehabilitation costs while also reducing overall project time and expenses. Together with the Wardha Road structure, Maha Metro has now built nearly 9 km of double-decker viaducts, cementing its place as a pioneer in metro infrastructure development in India.
