Residents of Savitribai Phule Nagar in South Nagpur staged a strong protest march on Thursday, demanding ownership titles (patta) for their homes.
The rally, organized by the Savitribai Phule Nagar Samagra Vikas Kruti Samiti, began at Samvidhan Square and moved towards the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, raising slogans for justice. The protesters pointed out that under the government resolution dated September 11, 2019, slum dwellers on private land in Nagpur have been receiving land titles. Yet, despite repeated assurances, Savitribai Phule Nagar remains excluded from the scheme, leaving hundreds of families uncertain about their future.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the residents demanded immediate implementation of the scheme in their settlement. “We too deserve security over our homes. Why should our locality alone be left out?” said one protester during the march.
Traffic police stopped the rally near their office, preventing it from reaching the Secretariat gate. However, a delegation of residents was allowed to meet Special Officer Asha Pathan at the CM’s Secretariat, where they submitted a memorandum listing their demands.
Prominent participants included Mamta Badole, Shubham Pantawane, Suman Bansod, Chhaya Meshram, Sunanda Sonawane, Devanand Dhanke, Dayashankar Kamble, Pundlik Gajbhiye, Vinod Manke, Siddharth Shambharkar, Manoj Uke, Dinesh Jivne, Smita Waghmare, Shalu Chandurkar, Mudraka Khonde, Mahananda Modak, Sharmila Damke, Prakash Gedam, Pratibha Humne, Seema Mhaiskar, and Bharti Patil.
With the memorandum now in the Chief Minister’s office, residents have warned that if no action is taken, the agitation will intensify in the coming days.
