The Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA) wholeheartedly welcomes the recent proposal of the Government to reduce Goods & Services Tax (GST) rates on several essential and commonly used items. This rationalisation of tax slabs is a step in the right direction and will provide much-needed relief to millions of consumers across the country.
Ever since the introduction of GST in 2017, VTA has been advocating for periodic reviews of tax rates to ensure that the levy remains consumer-friendly, equitable, and growth-oriented. The latest proposal of lowering the GST on daily-use products and essential goods will not only bring down the cost of living but will also improve compliance and broaden the tax base.
VTA President Shrawan Kumar Malu stated, “Taxation must not be a burden on the common man. The government’s initiative to reduce GST rates on many items is a welcome move which will directly benefit households and boost consumer confidence. It will also help in checking inflationary pressures.”
Secretary Tejinder Singh Renu further added, “Lower GST on essential goods will make them more affordable, thereby increasing demand. At the same time, it strengthens the vision of ‘Ease of Living’ as promoted by the Government of India. This will also encourage better compliance from traders as tax rates are simplified and rationalised. Input Tax Credit (ITC) should be available at all slab levels as with ITC, trading in the black market is discouraged”.
VTA firmly believes that rational GST rates benefit all stakeholders – consumers, traders, manufacturers, and the government. Reduced tax incidence increases purchasing power, drives consumption, and in turn stimulates the economy.
The Association also urges the Government to continue reviewing and rationalising GST rates from time to time, especially on items of mass consumption and services directly linked to public welfare. VTA remains committed to engaging with policymakers and providing constructive suggestions to make GST a truly “Good & Simple Tax.”
Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA) is a leading non-governmental organisation working since 2011 towards safeguarding taxpayers’ interests, promoting transparency in governance, and ensuring fair taxation policies.
