Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has unveiled The Bengal Files, the third installment in his widely debated Files Trilogy. The series began with The Tashkent Files and gained national attention with The Kashmir Files, both of which stirred controversy yet found strong box office traction.
The newly released film turns the spotlight on some of the darkest chapters of pre-Independence India, including Direct Action Day, the 1946 Calcutta Killings, and the Noakhali riots. Agnihotri uses two parallel narratives — one tracking a police officer investigating corruption and the other revisiting the communal strife that preceded Partition — to weave together political themes and historical trauma.
Featuring veteran actors Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi, the film aims to raise questions about political corruption, communalism, and Bengal’s historical complexities.
The Bengal Files opened in cinemas on September 5, clashing with Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 4 and Hollywood release The Conjuring: Last Rites.
OTT Release Update
As with Agnihotri’s earlier films, the movie will stream on ZEE5 after its theatrical run. Though an official digital release date has not been announced, industry trends suggest a six-to-eight-week window. This places the film’s likely OTT premiere between late October and early November 2025.
