A 130-year-old wall at the historic Marwadi Chawl in Empress Mill suddenly collapsed. The incident caused panic among local residents as three cars parked along the wall were completely crushed under the debris.
Eyewitnesses reported that a loud cracking sound was heard before the wall gave way, sending dust and rubble across the area. Fortunately, no one was present near the wall at the time, and residents escaped unhurt.
NMC officials and police rushed to the site immediately after receiving information. Rescue teams cleared the debris and ensured that no one was trapped beneath the collapsed portion.
Authorities have begun an inspection of other old structures in the area to assess their safety and prevent similar incidents. Residents have demanded immediate repairs and stronger safety measures for heritage chawls and mill compounds that are more than a century old.
Local leaders have assured that compensation will be provided for the damaged vehicles, and structural audits will be carried out to safeguard the lives of people living around the mill premises.
