Nagpur’s Traffic Branch has rolled out strict curbs on heavy vehicle movement during the day to minimize road mishaps and ease congestion within city limits. Effective from Monday, trucks and other heavy carriers are barred from entering city roads between 6 am and 10 pm. The order will stay in force until October 7.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani issued the directive and stationed traffic teams at seven key entry points across Nagpur, including New Katol Naka (Sadar zone), Waddhamna (MIDC zone), Jabalpur Highway (Ajni zone), Umargaon, Ramnath City (Indora zone), Kapsi Bridge (Kamptee zone), and Sai Mandir area.
At each checkpoint, one officer along with three constables will be on duty in two shifts to ensure compliance. Barricades have been erected at entry routes, and for the first few days, truck drivers will be briefed on the new rules. Thereafter, violators will face stringent action, officials warned.
The ban, however, exempts vehicles carrying essential commodities such as fuel, LPG cylinders, milk, groceries, and government service vehicles. To prevent misuse, police teams will also keep watch on alternate or hidden routes often used by trucks to bypass restrictions.
Officials believe the measure will play a major role in improving road safety and easing traffic flow. Data reveals that in the past five years, Nagpur has witnessed 422 fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles, resulting in 457 deaths.
