Vehicles transporting schoolchildren, such as school buses and vans, are now formally categorized under “school vans.” Under the new decision, vehicles carrying up to 12 students will be officially recognized as school vans. This move is expected to bring stricter safety regulations for student transport.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnayak emphasized the need for tighter norms to ensure the safety of students traveling by road. A meeting was held with operators, schools, and parents to finalize the decision. According to the Transport Department, this classification will help enforce several safety measures and ensure accountability for children’s secure commuting.
Regulations for School Vans
A school van carrying up to 12 students along with one driver will be allowed. Each vehicle must have a separate door on the left side for boarding and alighting. Only designated entry and exit points will be permitted for students’ safety. Beyond these rules, operators cannot make independent arrangements.
In addition, vans must carry a first-aid box, fire extinguisher, and proper safety equipment. GPS-based vehicle tracking systems will also be mandatory. These conditions aim to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of students.
