In an unusual turn of events for the city’s ₹998-crore Indora-Dighori flyover project, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken construction literally to someone’s doorstep—more precisely, through their balcony.
The project, which involves two major flyovers connecting Kamal Chowk to Reshimbagh Square and Bhande Plot Square to Dighori, now features an unexpected addition: a pier that extends directly into the Patre family’s balcony at Ashok Square.
According to a media report, Shrusti Patre, acknowledged the “minor inconvenience” caused by the flyover pier but said they felt powerless. “We can’t do anything because it’s a government project,” she said.
When asked if the family had received any prior warning, Shrusti Patre said they were only served a notice a few months ago. She added that no compensation had been offered, and while MLA Pravin Datke expressed sympathy, construction workers continued mixing cement right outside the house’s metal grill. Nagarjuna Construction Company Limited (NCCL), the contractor for the project, could not be reached, and the company’s safety officer, R S Mishra, refused to share the project manager’s contact but clarified that the “family hadn’t encroached illegally” and that NHAI had tried to save as many houses as possible.
Despite those efforts, the Patres’ house was impacted, giving Nagpur a bizarre new landmark: a flyover with a balcony view, now drawing attention as an unintended tourist spot. When Lokmat Times asked NHAI site engineer Manoj Ghode how this design passed the initial blueprints, he replied, “let me check the design first and call back later.” He never returned the call, seemingly realizing the bridge had indeed intruded into someone’s balcony.
Meanwhile, the Patre family is left grappling with how to coexist with a flyover literally built through their private property. The incident raises questions, as such large-scale construction would have required design approval and coordination with the household—yet the full story remains undisclosed, and no one is talking.
