A disconnection drive in Barasignal Borkar Nagar, located in the Fort-2 Command area of Gandhibagh Zone, has sparked tension after authorities cut nearly 165 illegal household water connections that had been operating for years.
On September 12, Orange City Water (OCW) teams disconnected the illegal lines and began interconnection works to shift consumers onto metered pipeline connections. However, workers were allegedly abused and threatened by a group from the Sweeper Colony, forcing the work to be abandoned midway. The intervention of local police was required to ensure the safe release of the OCW staff and contractual workers. As a result, the locality was left without a water supply.
The following day, September 13, OCW officials, with assurances from Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) authorities, attempted to resume and complete the pending interconnection works. But once again, the same group of residents reportedly obstructed the efforts, demanding restoration of their illegal supply lines. Despite the presence of law enforcement and assurances from local representatives, OCW staff faced threats to their lives. Under pressure from political figures and local influences, the old illegal connections were forcibly re-established.
As of now, reconnection of these unauthorized pipelines is underway, making it impossible for OCW to restore supply through the legal metered network.
