With increasing preference among parents for English medium education, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to start seven new English medium schools in the city from the academic year 2026–27.
These schools will be affiliated with the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Pune, and will operate under the “Full School Management with Private Partner Teacher Model” (FSMPT Model). They will be established in premises of previously closed-down NMC schools and will primarily benefit children from slum areas and economically weaker sections. The schools will be run jointly by NMC and selected non-governmental organizations (NGOs), for which tenders have been invited.
This initiative is being implemented under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary and Additional Commissioner Mrs. Vaishnavi B., with educational leadership from Education Officer Mrs. Sadhana Sayam. The goal is to provide underprivileged students with access to quality English medium education so that they can compete on par with students from other schools.
NMC had earlier started six English medium schools in 2021 in collaboration with Akanksha Foundation — one in each assembly constituency — which continue to receive excellent response. These include:
Baboolban NMC Primary School, Garoba Maidan (East Nagpur)
Ramnagar NMC Primary School, Ramnagar (West Nagpur)
Late Baburao Bobde NMC Primary School, Chinchbhavan, Wardha Road (South-West Nagpur)
Late Gopalrao Motghare (Khadan) NMC Primary School
Rambhau Mhalgi Nagar NMC Primary School, Mhalgi Nagar (South Nagpur)
Rani Durgavati NMC Primary School, Rani Durgavati (North Nagpur)
Currently, 1,842 students are enrolled in these schools. Building on this success, another new English medium school was launched in 2025–26 at R.B.G.G.R. (Agrawal) School, Bijli Nagar, Sadar, also with the support of Akanksha Foundation. That school too has received a positive response.
As part of the new expansion, Additional Commissioner Mrs. Vaishnavi B. inspected the unused NMC schools and verified infrastructure such as classrooms, playgrounds, and the presence of nearby economically weaker settlements. Based on her report, the Education Department proposed the plan, which was approved by the Municipal Commissioner.
