On the eve of World Ozone Day, the Foundation for Education and Research in Climate Change (FERCC), New Delhi, organised a one-day workshop on the ‘Importance of Climate Literacy’ in collaboration with the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) at Sevadal Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur
The workshop witnessed participation from a large number of school teachers from Nagpur city and surrounding areas. Discussions focused on topics including climate education and teacher training, importance of ozone, the impact of radiation and pollution on health, implications of environmental laws and regulations, and waste and pollution management. Scientists from IMD, NEERI, legal experts, and environmentalists delivered insightful talks.
Dr. Atual Vaidya, Vice Chancellor of LIT University, Nagpur, served as the chief guest and emphasized in his address that people should focus more on understanding climate issues rather than spending excessive time on mobile devices.
Prof. Sushil Kumar Dash, Former HoD, Atmospheric Science Division, IIT Delhi, and President of FERCC, highlighted the crucial role of teachers in promoting climate literacy. He stated that teachers are the primary agents in shaping students’ awareness and urged them to become competent in environmental education.
Er. Sanjay Shende, President of Sevadal Shikshan Sanstha, spoke on the significance of celebrating World Ozone Day. Dr. Anupama Dhoble, Officiating Principal of Sevadal Mahila Mahavidyalaya, welcomed all dignitaries and participants. Dr. Pravin Shende, HOD, Environmental Department, and convenor of the workshop, emphasized the importance of ozone protection. Dr. Ravindra Akre thanked Prof. Dash for organizing the event and explained that climate literacy involves understanding the interaction between climate and society, highlighting the protective role of the ozone layer as “the roof of our planet.”
The event also featured a Meteorological Exhibition, which attracted students, teachers, and other participants, providing hands-on learning about the scientific and technical work of IMD. Contributions from students, teaching and non-teaching staff, faculty members of SMM, and IMS members were instrumental in the successful organization of the workshop.
