In a fresh crackdown on underage driving, a city court has imposed a ₹30,000 fine on the mother of a 17-year-old boy and prohibited the teenager from driving any vehicle until he turns 18.
This marks the second such case in Nagpur in recent weeks, underscoring the Traffic Police’s intensified action against minors behind the wheel as part of Operation U-Turn.
According to the traffic police, the incident took place on August 31, 2025, at Shankar Nagar Square under the jurisdiction of Sonegaon Traffic Division. Traffic Constable Rajesh Dube intercepted a two-wheeler being ridden by a 17-year-old boy who was travelling alone. When asked to produce his documents, he failed to show a valid driving licence. Further checks revealed that the vehicle was registered in his mother’s name.
Traffic police registered a case under the Motor Vehicles Act against both the minor and the vehicle’s registered owner for allowing him to drive. During the hearing before the First Class Judicial Magistrate’s Court (Motor Vehicles), the court examined all the evidence and found the minor guilty of driving without a licence, while his mother was held responsible for permitting it.
Over two dozen parents faced FIRs: DCP Matani
According to a media report, DCP Lohit Matani said that At least two dozen parents have been subjected to FIRS under Section 199A of Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019, for allowing their underage wards to drive. “Parents can face up to three years in jail or a Rs 25,000 fine or both for violating Section 199A. The law holds guardians or vehicle owners liable when a minor commits traffic violation. Hence, parents should not encourage minor driving, as it poses risks to both their ward and others on the road.”
