Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, has written to Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, requesting the establishment of an Independent Intellectual Property (IP) Office in Nagpur. The request was made on the basis of a detailed representation submitted by the Association for Industrial Development (AID), Nagpur, led by President Shri Ashish Kale.
In his letter, Shri Gadkari highlighted that the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (RGNIIPM), Nagpur, already functions as a premier national institute for training, research, and management in Intellectual Property Rights. Despite having state-of-the-art infrastructure and a central location, patent and trademark registrations from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Gujarat, and Goa are still processed in Mumbai, causing delays and additional expenses for innovators and industrialists.
Shri Gadkari emphasized that Vidarbha is rapidly growing as an industrial hub, with several industries already operational and many more in the pipeline. Establishing an IP office at Nagpur would not only ease the burden on Mumbai but also greatly benefit startups, MSMEs, and innovators across central India.
The representation submitted by AID pointed out that Nagpur, with its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and growing industrial base, is emerging as a major hub for patent and trademark filings. Having an IP office at the RGNIIPM campus would significantly enhance efficiency and provide convenience to stakeholders.
“A positive decision in this regard will accelerate industrial growth and provide much-needed support to innovators from across central India,” Shri Gadkari stated in his communication to Shri Goyal.
AID has expressed confidence that the government will consider this request favorably, paving the way for strengthening the intellectual property ecosystem and boosting regional development.
