With Navratri festivities set to begin, the city police have stepped up security to ensure smooth and peaceful celebrations. Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal has announced the creation of 10 special squads tasked with keeping a close watch on Garba and Dandiya events.
These units, which will also include women officers, will operate both in plain clothes and uniform. They will directly report to the Commissioner and conduct surprise checks at venues, particularly on the outskirts, where intelligence inputs suggest some organisers might be engaging in unlawful activities.
In total, more than 2,500 police personnel will be on duty across the city during Navratri. They will be supported by 1,300 Home Guards and a company of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF). “Our aim is to see that every Garba and Dandiya programme is conducted in a safe and peaceful atmosphere,” Dr. Singal said.
Ahead of the festival, the Commissioner also held a review meeting with senior officers, including Deputy Commissioner of Special Branch Shashikant Satav, to fine-tune the security plan. Safety measures at key temples such as Koradi Temple, Agyaram Devi Temple, Geeta Mandir, and Bhavani Mata Temple were also reviewed, with necessary instructions issued to ensure vigilance.
