n a significant administrative move, Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari has issued a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that prevents arbitrary demolition of unauthorized constructions within the Nagpur city limits.
According to the SOP issued on September 22, civic officials must now provide a minimum 15-day “show cause” or legally stipulated notice to property owners or tenants before carrying out any demolition. The notice must be sent via registered post, duly signed upon receipt, and also affixed prominently on the concerned structure.
This measure aims to ensure that no building is demolished without following due legal process, in line with the Supreme Court’s directives on multiple petitions emphasizing procedural fairness in actions against illegal constructions across the country.
Officials said the new SOP also brings clarity to the earlier circular issued by the state’s Urban Development Department earlier this year. Lack of clear procedural guidelines in the previous order had led to confusion among enforcement officers and delayed action on unauthorized buildings.
With the latest SOP, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) hopes to bring greater transparency, accountability, and fairness in handling demolition cases within the city.
