In a decisive move to curb drug trafficking, Nagpur City Police on Monday incinerated more than 1.7 tonnes of narcotics valued at ₹3.12 crore, all seized during the ongoing “Operation Thunder – Together for a Drug-Free Society” campaign.
The drive, initiated by Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, targets drug peddlers, carriers and users across the city. Acting on his directives, officers disposed of large quantities of marijuana (ganja), mephedrone (MD) powder, charas and doda powder at the Maharashtra Enviro Ltd. facility in Butibori MIDC, a unit authorised by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The destruction followed all Narcotics Drugs Disposal Committee protocols.
During Monday’s operation alone, contraband from 100 registered offences—weighing 272.24 kg and worth about ₹42.77 lakh—was destroyed. Senior officials including Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Rahul Makanikar, DCP (Headquarters) Ashwini Patil, along with State Crime Investigation Department and MPCB representatives, supervised the process.
This was the third major disposal under Operation Thunder:
• June 24, 2025 – 714.23 kg of narcotics worth ₹1.32 crore destroyed from 54 cases.
• June 20, 2024 – 733.78 kg worth ₹1.37 crore destroyed from 110 cases.
With Monday’s action, Nagpur police have now eliminated a cumulative 1,710.25 kg of drugs seized from 264 cases, with a total street value estimated at ₹3,12,36,582.
Officials reaffirmed that the campaign will continue aggressively, urging citizens to cooperate and help build a drug-free Nagpur through vigilance and public awareness.
