The 32nd edition of the Father Peter Mermier Inter-School Football Tournament, hosted by St. John’s High School, came to a thrilling close as SFS School emerged champions after a 2-0 triumph over the hosts in the final at St. John’s Ground.
Despite the soggy, rain-hit pitch, both sides displayed grit and flair to keep the crowd thoroughly engaged. St. John’s had the first real chance when Sahil Samudre set up Yash Rajwade, but the opportunity went begging. SFS, however, quickly took charge. In the 9th minute, Samuel Francis produced a spectacular long-range strike from 25 yards—arguably the goal of the tournament—giving SFS the early lead.
After halftime, SFS continued to dominate. A handball by St. John’s defender Umar in the penalty area proved costly, as Krutarth Deshbhratar confidently slotted home from the spot in the 17th minute to make it 2-0. Though St. John’s, with strong efforts from Moses Joseph, Vaibhav Prajapati, and Ashmit Pramanik, tried to mount a comeback, they were repeatedly thwarted by the rock-solid SFS defense and the brilliance of goalkeeper Jordan Merit, who pulled off several crucial saves.
The closing ceremony was attended by Ex-Superior General of MSFS Fr. Agnelo Fernandes, Vice-Principal Fr. Vishwas Torne, Administrator Fr. Bosco, Fr. Telesphor, and Supervisor Abhay Tulankar. The tournament was successfully coordinated by Sir Savio Andrew, Allan Khujur, and Ankush Bhadange under the guidance of Fr. Vishwas Torne.
