Former President of India Ram Nath Kovind visited the historic Deekshabhoomi in Nagpur today, paying respectful obeisance to Lord Buddha and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. Deekshabhoomi, the sacred site where Dr. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism in 1956 with thousands of his followers, remains a powerful symbol of equality, compassion, and social justice.
Kovind arrived at the premises this morning and offered floral tributes at the stupa and the statues of Ambedkar and Buddha. During his visit, he observed a moment of silence and participated in silent meditation. He also interacted with devotees and visitors, expressing admiration for the ideals that inspired the mass conversion — ideals of dignity, human rights, and non-discrimination.
In his remarks, Kovind underscored that the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar goes beyond ritual— it is a continuing call to confront injustice, uplift marginalized communities, and renew faith in constitutional values. He said that places like Deekshabhoomi are not just memorials but living reminders of India’s unfinished journey toward social equality.
Officials present at the visit included local administration dignitaries, temple trustees, and community leaders. Security and logistical arrangements were in place to ensure smooth flow of visitors and to honour the solemnity of the occasion.
This visit comes at a time when Deekshabhoomi continues to draw thousands of pilgrims annually, especially on key Buddhist observances and the anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar’s conversion. The site not only commemorates a historic event, but also inspires contemporary efforts to uphold justice and human dignity.
