The Maharashtra government has officially allowed all shops and establishments, except those selling or serving alcohol, to operate 24 hours a day.
A circular issued by the Industries, Energy, Labour and Mining Department clarified that the decision aims to ensure the effective implementation of provisions under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017. The government emphasized that establishments such as permit rooms, beer bars, and wine shops remain excluded from this relaxation.
This move follows multiple complaints from traders and business owners that local authorities and police were preventing them from operating round-the-clock despite the law permitting it. The government has now directed all local administrations and police departments to ensure strict compliance with the revised rule.
Under the Act, while shops and businesses can function 24/7, every employee must be granted a mandatory weekly holiday of 24 consecutive hours. This safeguard ensures worker welfare even as business operations expand.
Theatres and cinemas, which were earlier included in the list of regulated establishments, have now been removed, allowing them greater flexibility in scheduling shows.
The government believes the decision will boost commercial activity, support employment generation, and enhance convenience for consumers across Maharashtra.
