The power and grace of Goddess Durga was bid farewell this year in a greener way. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) reported the immersion of 159 Durga idols across the city in specially created eco-friendly artificial lakes. The process continued until October 2, ensuring that rituals were observed without harming natural water bodies.
Under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari and Additional Commissioner Smt. Vasumana Pant, with planning by Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Bhagat and Chief Sanitation Officer Dr. Gajendra Mahalle, the civic body arranged seven artificial lakes at Laxminagar Zone, Dhantoli Zone, Nehrunagar Zone, Gorewada Ring Road, Police Line Takli, Kachhi Visa and Koradi. Cranes and sanitation staff were deployed to assist devotees during immersions.
The response varied across locations. Gorewada Ring Road recorded the highest number with 73 idols, followed by Koradi with 51. Laxminagar Zone saw 17 immersions, Dhantoli 15, and Nehrunagar 3. No immersions were recorded at Police Line Takli and Kachhi Visa. The figures highlighted that citizens are increasingly embracing artificial lakes as a sustainable alternative to rivers and lakes.
NMC officials said the initiative not only reduced pollution but also allowed for better management of idol disposal and post-immersion clean-up. “Eco-friendly immersion is no longer just an option, it is a necessity,” an official noted.
The 2025 Durga festival thus concluded with devotion meeting responsibility — blending tradition with a strong message of environmental protection for Nagpur.
