Nagpur: A festive evening turned tragic in Kalamna on Thursday when a 26-year-old man was stabbed to death following a heated altercation during a Durga idol immersion rally. Police have taken three accused, including a minor in conflict with the law, into custody.
According to police, the deceased has been identified as Devendra Ajay Chouhan (26), a native of Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, who had been living in Nagpur for the past three years and assisting complainant Durgesh Chouhan (36), a glass fitting worker and resident of Minimala Nagar.
On October 2, around 8:45 pm, the complainant and Devendra were standing near the Elements Harmony Home and Designer Studio building in Minimala Nagar to watch the immersion procession. Accused Aditya Nitesh Chacherkar (21), his brother Akash alias Tochu Chacherkar (20), both residents of Minimala Nagar, and their friend, a minor, were also present.
During the procession, Devendra accidentally brushed against Aditya, which triggered a verbal spat. The accused allegedly hurled abuses and assaulted both men. In the scuffle, Akash held Devendra while Aditya took a knife from the minor and stabbed Devendra two to three times on his ribs.
Locals rushed the grievously injured victim to Ramdeobaba Hospital, Wardhaman Nagar, and later to Mayo Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
On the basis of Durgesh Chouhan’s complaint, Kalamna Police registered an offence under BNS Sections 103(1), 115(2), 352, and 3(5) along with Section 135 of Maharashtra Police Act. Acting swiftly, police detained both brothers and the minor. Further investigation is on.
