In a move aimed at improving road safety and commuter convenience, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will soon begin installing QR code-enabled project sign boards across national highways. The initiative, announced on Friday, will allow travellers to access detailed project information and emergency helplines simply by scanning a QR code on the signboards.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the vertical signboards will display details such as the national highway number, project length, construction and maintenance schedules, along with contact information for highway patrol units, toll managers, and project engineers.
In addition, commuters will be able to access emergency helpline 1033, details of NHAI field offices, and nearby facilities including hospitals, fuel stations, restrooms, police stations, restaurants, toll plazas, truck lay-byes, puncture repair shops, and EV charging stations.
Officials said the QR boards will be installed at key points such as wayside amenities, rest areas, toll plazas, and at the start and end points of major highways to ensure maximum visibility. The ministry stated that the initiative will not only improve access to real-time information but also strengthen road safety and enhance the overall travel experience for highway users.
“The QR code sign boards will not only help improve safety but also promote awareness about national highways across the country,” the ministry said in a statement.
