With cybercrime on the rise, senior citizens have been urged to remove unreliable applications from their mobile phones, as such apps are increasingly being used by scammers to steal money and personal data.
Cyber expert Sunil Sadasivan issued the warning while addressing a programme organised by Teli Samaj Sabha to mark World Senior Citizens Day and Jyestha Nagrik Pratisthan. The event was inaugurated by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and attended by Datta Meghe, Anil Sole, Raju Mishra, and others.
Sadasivan explained that phishing messages and fraudulent SMSes often originate from non-vetted apps, enabling cybercriminals to access victims’ bank accounts. He advised users to switch off their mobile phones once every ten days to reduce the risk of hacking and to verify any OTP requests carefully before sharing.
PI Seema Surve from the Bharosa Cell was also present and interacted with attendees on the issue of online safety.
The session highlighted the importance of digital awareness and mobile security, particularly among the elderly, who are often the primary targets of online fraudsters.
