Nagpur: In a major move aimed at curbing road mishaps, the Nagpur City Police have imposed a ban on the entry of heavy vehicles, including trucks, within city limits. The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani, will be effective from October 8, 2025, to April 7, 2026.
According to the notification, trucks travelling through Nagpur from other cities will now have to use the Outer Ring Road instead of internal city routes. The decision follows alarming data showing 457 fatalities and over 560 serious injuries in accidents involving heavy vehicles between 2020 and 2025.
With the completion of the Outer Ring Road, police officials said heavy vehicles can now bypass the city easily. The ban covers trucks, trailers, and tankers carrying goods such as construction materials, though special permissions may be granted by the DCP on a case-by-case basis.
Restricted Routes and Timings
Heavy vehicles are prohibited from plying on major stretches, including Residency Road, WHC Road, Sitabuldi Main Road, Malviya Road, Old Bhandara Road, and Rifle Range Road, between 6 am and 10 pm. Entry of trucks from Amravati Road and Ajni FCI godowns will be restricted during peak hours (6 am–12 noon and 4 pm–10 pm).
Vehicles carrying essential goods such as LPG, milk, and fuel are exempted from the restrictions. Limited access will also be allowed for Gandhibagh Market, where only five trucks can operate at a time under a 30 km/h speed limit.
Designated Routes for RTO and Government Vehicles
Trucks heading to RTO offices or engaged in government duties—including those belonging to NMC, NIT, Defence, or Police—are allowed movement during the day through earmarked routes.
Authorities said the restrictions aim to enhance road safety and ensure smoother traffic flow across the city, especially during busy daytime hours.
