In a first-of-its-kind move, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has identified 30 proposed dog-feeding spots across the city to bring order and safety to stray dog feeding. The civic body clarified that the sites are not final yet, and each will undergo a detailed inspection before approval.
The selected locations were proposed by city-based animal feeders. NMC teams will now assess every site for public safety, distance from electric poles, residential areas, and traffic zones, followed by consultations with local residents. Only after this process will the final list be officially notified.
“We must balance compassion for animals with residents’ safety. These sites are only proposals for now. We will finalize them after on-ground checks and community consensus,” said Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant.
Simultaneously, NMC Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari has directed all 10 zonal offices to ensure round-the-clock availability of anti-rabies vaccines at their Urban Primary Health Centres. The civic body has also launched drives to clean garbage hotspots, which often attract stray dogs and heighten human-animal conflict.
Nagpur has around 1.10 lakh stray dogs, with 75,000 vaccinated and 42,000 sterilized so far. The NMC plans to expand both efforts alongside school awareness campaigns to promote safe behavior around dogs.
Animal feeders have welcomed the initiative as a step toward “planned coexistence,” while some commuters have voiced safety concerns. Final zones will be announced after inspections and public feedback — marking a shift from ad hoc feeding to a humane, structured model of coexistence.
