In a major step toward promoting gender-inclusive infrastructure, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to construct a state-of-the-art hostel for working women in Jaitala, at an estimated cost of ₹22.75 crore.
The civic body has awarded the contract to city-based firm M/s Hanswahini Construction Company, which will undertake both the design and construction of the proposed three-storey facility.
Spread across 10,600 sq. metres, the hostel aims to provide a safe, comfortable, and self-sustaining environment for 120 working women relocating to Nagpur for employment. The facility will have a total built-up area of 6,550 sq. metres and feature a mix of single, double, and triple-occupancy rooms, each equipped with attached toilets and balconies.
Designed as a community-oriented space, the hostel will prioritise safety, recreation, and overall well-being. Key amenities will include a 26×14-metre dining hall, kitchen, utility store, crèche, indoor games room, reading area, computer lab, and administrative offices. At its centre, a landscaped courtyard will serve as a serene green hub for relaxation and social interaction.
The project places women’s safety at the forefront of its design. The hostel will be enclosed within a secure boundary wall and feature a double-guard lobby system to prevent unauthorised entry. Security measures will include 24×7 CCTV surveillance, a visitor verification system, and dedicated guard rooms staffed by both male and female personnel.
To further enhance safety, only Aadhaar-verified residents will be permitted, with all entries digitally logged. The premises will be illuminated with high-mast lights and sensor-based corridor lighting, supported by energy-efficient fixtures throughout.
Out of the total site area, 4,050 sq. metres will be developed as open space, featuring landscaped walkways, more than 30 trees—including Gulmohar, Banyan, and ornamental species—and parking for 10 cars and over 50 two-wheelers.
Once completed, the Jaitala working women’s hostel will stand as more than just a residence — it will symbolise Nagpur’s growing commitment to women’s safety, empowerment, and inclusive urban development.
