Naxal leader Bhupathi, along with his 60 associates, will formally surrender before Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on October 16. Mellojula Venugopal alias Bhupathi alias Sonu with his colleagues in the Naxal movement is learnt to have surrendered before the Gadchiroli police, and will formally surrender before Fadnavis on Thursday.
Bhupathi had reached the Polit Bureau of the Central Committee of the Maoist Movement in the country. More than Rs 10 crore of prize on his dead announced by different states, Bhupathi decided to end the violent movement given the condition of the movement.
Bhupathi was known as an effective organiser and planner and was guiding the platoon on Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh borders. He agreed that armed struggle has failed following reduced public support and deaths of many important leaders and activists. His decision was opposed by some prominent leaders, including General Secretary Thippari Tirupathi alias Devji. However, the Central Committee supported his decision to surrender, end armed struggle and sort out the issue through dialogue.
The Gadchiroli Police have not officially confirmed the news of his surrender. Bhupathi is under tight security of Gadchiroli police. He has been assured security and rehabilitation.
