Ten students were injured after a school van plunged off a bridge in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district when the driver lost control while trying to avoid large potholes. The accident took place near Surewara village, where the road is severely damaged. In an attempt to dodge the craters, the driver swerved sharply, causing the van to fall off a low bridge. The injured children were rushed to the district hospital for treatment.
Visuals from the hospital show medical staff attending to the injured boys and girls as worried parents try to console them.
The mishap has once again sparked outrage over the poor condition of roads in the region, with residents accusing the Public Works Department of negligence.
Bhandara district — known as the “district of lakes” for its nearly 3,500 ancient water bodies — has become the subject of local sarcasm. Residents have been sharing photos of water-filled potholes on social media, quipping that the state of the roads explains why the district is so famous for its “lakes.”
