Even after years of efforts by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Solid Waste Management Department, garbage black spots continue to plague some of the city’s most upscale localities. Once over 1,500 such spots were identified across Nagpur, but despite repeated cleanup drives, 443 black spots remain today — with a staggering 65% concentrated in Zones 1 to 5, covering areas like Laxminagar, Dharampeth, and Dhantoli.
The NMC has engaged two private contractors for waste collection — AG Enviro for Zones 1 to 5 and BVG India for Zones 6 to 10. However, most of the problem areas fall under AG Enviro’s jurisdiction, raising questions over the company’s efficiency. Officials admit that AG Enviro’s garbage trucks often operate uncovered, leading to waste spilling on roads, while their vehicles and number plates remain in poor condition. BVG India, too, has 154 black spots in its zones, with unsatisfactory performance.
Due to repeated lapses, the NMC has been imposing a 10% penalty for the past two months on both contractors. Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant has instructed them to repair vehicles and improve waste collection, but progress remains slow.
Ironically, while Satranjipura Zone has visible garbage piles, its official data shows zero black spots, reportedly because some Assistant Commissioners hide problem areas to avoid accountability.
Zone-wise Garbage Black Spots:
Laxminagar – 119 | Dharampeth – 51 | Hanuman Nagar – 47 | Dhantoli – 62 | Nehru Nagar – 10 | Gandhi Bagh – 53 | Satranjipura – 0 | Lakadganj – 23 | Aasi Nagar – 31 | Mangalwari – 47
Total: 443
