In a major push for Nagpur’s development, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the creation of an ultra-modern business township in the city’s Kachipura area, modeled on Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Speaking to journalists during a Diwali Milan event, Gadkari also outlined several other key infrastructure initiatives.
The proposed township will include modern amenities such as a swimming pool and six badminton courts. Additionally, four large sports grounds will be developed across Nagpur to benefit nearly one lakh students. Highlighting Vidarbha’s importance as a cotton-producing region, Gadkari revealed that the MIDC is establishing nine new markets, with over 20 additional market yards in the pipeline. These initiatives aim to boost opportunities in both retail and wholesale trade.
On the infrastructure front, Gadkari announced that the Nagpur–Bhandara National Highway, one of Vidarbha’s busiest routes, will be expanded from four to six lanes. The ₹1,600-crore project has received administrative approval, with the detailed project report (DPR) finalized. The tendering process will begin soon, followed by the start of construction.
Futala Fountain Project Resumes
Gadkari also confirmed the resumption of the Futala Fountain Project, which had been stalled for over a year and a half due to legal challenges and opposition from some groups. The delay, he said, caused losses of more than ₹15 crore. With the Supreme Court’s approval, work on the project has now restarted, and residents can soon look forward to enjoying a revitalized and scenic Futala Lake.
