Residents woke up to an unexpected change in weather on Saturday as unseasonal showers lashed the city, offering relief from the warm and humid conditions of the past few days. Light rain began around 8:30 a.m. and continued till 11 a.m., making the morning pleasantly cool.
While the winter chill continues to elude Nagpur even as October nears its end, meteorologists say the sudden spell of rain may lead to increased humidity in the coming days. Nevertheless, many citizens welcomed the drizzle as a sign of the approaching cooler season.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Nagpur recorded 15.6 mm of rainfall within just two and a half hours. Similar weather conditions were observed across Vidarbha, with Akola (18 mm), Amravati (12 mm), Brahmapuri (14 mm), Buldhana (8 mm), Wardha (7 mm), Gadchiroli (6 mm), Bhandara (1 mm), and Yavatmal (1 mm) also receiving light showers.
The IMD attributed the rainfall to a low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal, which intensified into a depression on Saturday and further strengthened into a deep depression by Sunday. It is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm—likely to be named ‘Cyclone Mothha,’ a name suggested by Thailand for tropical cyclones in the North Indian Ocean.
Under the influence of this system, more rainfall is likely over Central India, including Vidarbha, for the next three days. The sudden weather change also caused a significant drop in day temperatures across the region.
In Nagpur, the maximum temperature, which was above 34°C on Friday, fell sharply by 7.2°C within 24 hours. Bhandara, Brahmapuri, and Chandrapur also recorded a dip, while Amravati, Buldhana, Gadchiroli, and Wardha saw temperatures fall by at least 2°C. Over the last 36 hours, Bhandara received the highest rainfall at 50 mm, followed by Akola with 28.7 mm.
