Nagpur: The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed that the ongoing farmers’ protest site in Nagpur be vacated by 6 PM. The order was passed by Justice Rajneesh Vyas while hearing a suo motu petition concerning the law-and-order situation caused by the agitation.
The court observed that the permission granted for the protest was valid only for 24 hours, and continuing the demonstration beyond that period would be a violation of the approval conditions. Authorities have been instructed to ensure compliance with the order and restore normalcy in the affected areas.
The directive comes amid escalating tensions, as Prahar Party leader and former minister Bacchu Kadu warned earlier in the day that protesters would halt train services in Nagpur if their demands were not met. “Our farmers are drowning in debt. If the state government doesn’t have the money to waive their loans, the Centre should help,” Kadu said, addressing the media.
The ongoing protest, which entered its second day on Wednesday, has led to severe traffic disruptions across the city, particularly on the Nagpur-Hyderabad National Highway (NH-44). Thousands of farmers had gathered in Nagpur on Tuesday, demanding immediate and unconditional loan waivers and relief for drought-hit farmers.
Protesters alleged that despite multiple assurances, the Maharashtra government has failed to deliver on its promises to the farming community. Following the High Court’s order, police and district authorities are expected to begin clearing the site later this evening to enforce the directive.
