Nagpur: In a major crackdown on smuggling, the Customs Department at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport intercepted two passengers arriving from Sharjah and seized foreign-origin cigarettes worth ?14 lakh, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The passengers were stopped for inspection shortly after their arrival on Sunday morning. A detailed examination of their luggage led to the discovery of 701 boxes containing 1,40,200 cigarettes concealed within their bags, a customs official said.
The seized goods were taken under the provisions of the Customs Act, and a detailed investigation has been launched to trace the source and destination of the consignment. Officials added that further action will follow based on the outcome of the probe.
